North Yorkshire Moors Railway Thanks NYE for Support

Regular readers will know that The NYE re-post police appeals for information from the North Yorkshire Police website. We do this to inform our readers about crime in the area, support the efforts of the police to prevent and detect crime, and to let the victims know that the NYE is trying to help.

I am myself a Great Western Railway enthusiast and read with great sadness of the despicable attack on the beautiful and historic North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) carriages. It upset me. I was particularly saddened for the dedicated volunteers that keep the railway going. I asked the NYE to hold all other articles and run the North Yorkshire Police appeal for information straight away; the piece was up on the NYE website just after the appeal was published by the police. Because the NYE is a local internet news magazine, I hoped that this would assist the police by significantly increasing the coverage of their appeal for information.

Usually this goes without note; I was therefore very happy to receive a press contact from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, thanking the NYE for its coverage and support. The NYMR have asked us to publish their statement, which is below.

Download the PDF file NYMR_Statement.

North Yorkshire Police have also issued a statement about progress in the investigation and this can be read here, along with contact details for the passage of information.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is a wonderful asset for Yorkshire. It is a non- profitable charitable trust and fully accredited museum, providing memorable experiences for visitors through the operation of Britain’s most popular heritage railway. The NYMR cares for and operates the railway it owns from Pickering to Grosmont and operates over Network Rail from Grosmont to Whitby. It is registered as an  Educational Charitable Trust, providing education for all ages by providing a high quality, safe and authentic evocation of the steam age for the public.

The NYMR gives pleasure to hundreds of thousands of visitors to the area, thereby improving the tourist trade and local prosperity. It has also been used as a film set for Harry Potter, Downton Abbey and Dad’s Army, giving millions of people pleasure from viewing quality films and TV programs. I felt that an attack on this wonderful local amenity is an attack on the local community.

As one would expect, the volunteers have all pulled together to ensure the public will not be inconvenienced and there will be no diminution in service. In their email, the NYMR Press Office asked me to emphasise:

“The NYMR team are committed to delivering our passenger service as planned this summer, we’ve pulled carriages from other lines to ensure every service runs while repairs are made to our damaged set.”

The NYE is proud to support the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Please can I ask that you consider supporting this important local amenity, by going to Whitby Station and enjoying a steam railway journey through the beautiful North York Moors.

Alternatively the NYMR are asking for donations and you can donate by using the link: https://www.nymr.co.uk/Pages/Appeal/Category/donations

Finally, it wouldn’t be the NYE without a photoon:
