Police 7: Community Policing News Dec. ’21

The NYE’s Police 7 articles are intended to be a one stop shop for our readers covering crime prevention advice, court reports, police appeals for assistance, local community policing news, information on victim support, updates from the North Yorkshire Police (NYP) and the Police, Fire & Crime Commissioner (PFCC) for North Yorkshire and the Coroner.

We lead these articles with a photograph of the late Shaw Taylor, as a tribute to him. Shaw was a groundbreaking forensic journalist, who pioneered police media appeals for information in the programme Police 5. His work led to the successful conclusion of many casses in the UK, Europe and the United States through local programmes that followed the pioneering format of his original programme called Police 5 in 1962.

The NYE will continue to immediately publish urgent appeals for information from North Yorkshire Police (NYP), in missing persons cases, etc.

AVON & SOMERSET’S MOST WANTED

In this article, as well as the normal regular features, we focus on an appeal for assistance from Avon & Somerset Police in connection with the “Kill the Bill” riots in Bristol in March 2021.

We have taken this unusual step because the NYE team were sickened by the level of violence offered to Police Officers during the rioting.

More importantly, from a more practical perpective many of the rioters were from outside Bristol and many of our readers are Police Officers from various Forces around the country. It is therefore possible that one of our Police readers may recognise one of the people still sought.

Man who tried to burn Police Officers alive jailed for fourteen years

In our article “Coming soon to North Yorkshire?” on the 3^rd of April 2021 we published this image of a man who had tried to murder police officers by setting fire to the van in which they were trapped.

He was identified as Mr Ryan Roberts of no fixed address, convicted of attempted arson with intent to endanger life and was sentenced to fourteen years in prison.

It is unclear how Avon & Somerset were able to identify Roberts, but his image was widely published in the media and it seems likely that this may have assisted in his apprehension. This shows the importance of the media supporting the police by publishing their appeals for information in articles like Police 7.

Detective Superintendent James Riccio, the Senior Investigating Officer into the riots, said:

“Ryan Roberts’ behaviour was appalling and it’s clear his actions escalated the level of violence directed at officers that night. Not only did he repeatedly target officers by hitting and kicking them and throwing large objects at them, but he attempted to set fire to vehicles with officers inside, leaving some to contemplate whether it was better to stay inside a burning van or risk getting out into a hostile crowd. This was a terrible decision for them to make.

The investigation into the riot continues unabated and I know the team are committed to identifying all those involved and examining every piece of evidence, to ensure justice is served.”

North Yorkshire’s Most Wanted

A serious assault left a 67-year-old woman with a broken hip. NYP has released a picture of a woman who it believes witnessed the incident and may hold important information which would assist their enquiries. They are appealing for the woman, or anyone who can identify her to get in touch. They also want to identify a man who is believed to have been with the woman pictured, as he may also hold vital information. He is described as a white male who was wearing a blue top.

This man is wanted in connection with a theft in Scarborough

• Local men and a woman assaulted in Opera House Casino, Scarborough on Saturday the 18^th of December 2021.
• A woman in her 70s who was riding a mobility scooter has suffered multiple fractures in a collision with a car as she crossed Victoria Road in Scarborough at 2:38pm on the 3^rd of December.
• Serious assault in on Falsgrave Road, Scarborough at 11.30pm on Friday night (10 December 2021)

• Drug dealer jailed for seven-and-a-half years.
• Man jailed for two years for online child abuse offences.
• Man who kicked Policeman jailed.
• Man jailed for non-recent child abuse offences.
• Child abuser and online groomer sentenced to six years and 11 months’ imprisonment for sexually assaulting a toddler and threatening a twelve year old girl to engage in sexual activity.

Crime Prevention: Drink Driving

NYP has thanked members of the public who reported what they believed to be a drink driver on the A1 (M) Northbound at junction 49 Dishforth near Thirsk at around 8.15am on the 17^th of December. NYP received reports of a driver “all over the road”. The driver then crashed into the central reservation and spun to end up facing oncoming traffic.

The driver was almost three times over the legal limit when breathalysed, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with Drink Driving.

Please report anyone you suspect of drink driving to us by dialling 101 – or 999 if someone is about to get behind the wheel of a car after a drink.

Violence against women and girls

The National Police Chiefs’ Council and College of Policing launched a new framework setting out the direction of the police service to improve the response to violence against women and girls. Details from the Force website here.

Deputy Chief Constable Phil Cain said:

“North Yorkshire Police has already adopted violence against women and girls as a strategic priority, alongside domestic abuse and child abuse, to provide a greater focus and to build on the work that already goes on to investigate, bring offenders to justice and safeguard victims of all genders.

I cannot emphasise enough the commitment we have to reduce and eliminate the threat of harm in our communities and we will continue to work closely alongside our key partners to deliver a safer future for all.

To anyone who is experiencing violence, abuse or intimidation, I would ask you to please speak to North Yorkshire Police. You will be listened to, you will be believed and respected and we will do everything in our power to help you.”
