Shaw was a groundbreaking forensic journalist, who pioneered police media appeals for information in the programme Police 5. His work led to the successful conclusion of many casses in the UK, Europe and the United States through local programmes that followed the pioneering format of his original programme called Police 5 in 1962.

Community Engagement

PCSO Kath O’Reilly receives National PCSO Community Engagement Award

PCSO Kath O’Reilly has received a prestigious. National PCSO Community Engagement Award for her outstanding community engagement in the Barrowcliff Estate in Scarborough

In their recommendation for the award Sergeant Tom Wilkinson and Inspector Rebecca Lalor said:

“Kath has responsibility for one of the most deprived areas in the UK, the Barrowcliff Estate.

The estate is renowned as being anti-police, almost impossible to reach and hostile towards uniform, yet Kath can be found day in day out walking the streets of the estate, engaging with the community and building positive relationships.

She works tirelessly in the toughest beat in our policing command and has developed relationships with extremely difficult to reach communities, including class A addicts, domestic violence victims and vulnerable children exposed to extremely difficult and traumatic living conditions.

In an area where police are seen as the enemy, Kath has embedded herself to the point where she is welcomed into almost every home on the estate. She is known by her first name by almost all of the children and has first-class working relationships with the headmaster and safeguarding lead in the estate’s primary school.

It is without doubt that Kath is trusted by the community, as she constantly learns of ongoing issues disclosed to her that would otherwise go unheard, allowing her to link directly with Children and Family Services, domestic violence teams, as well as local council Community Safety Officers to ensure safeguarding risks are discussed and actioned.

Kath is a reliable and hard-working PCSO, whose contribution to policing the Barrowcliff Estate is priceless.”

Witness Appeals

Scarborough Assault

Police in Scarborough are appealing information after a man sustained a broken collar-bone after being punched and stamped on.

The assault happened at around midnight on Saturday 14 January on St Thomas Street near to the Sun Inn. The victim, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital for treatment.

The suspect is described as a white man, around 26 years old, 5ft 11in tall and of stocky build. He had dark hair and a dark beard and was wearing a dark top with a half zip on the front, and blue jeans.

Scarborough Assault

Scarborough Police is appealing for witnesses and information about an assault on St Nicholas Street at around 3.20am on Sunday the 8^th of January 2023.

The victim, a man aged in his 30s from Bishop Auckland, County Durham, was punched in the face by another man after intervening in an altercation between two women.

As well as witnesses and information about the incident, Scarborough Police are also appealing for a man and woman who had been in Sanctuary Bar to come forward to assist the investigation.

Man who acted in a threatening manner in a Whitby restaurant and then assaulted six Police Officers jailed

Lee Brown aged 33 of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to entering Trenchers restaurant at around 5pm on Friday the 13^th of January and demanding and helping himself to food from behind the counter, while using abusive and threatening language. Officers were immediately dispatched and by 5.13pm Brown had been arrested and was on his way to the Police Custody suite. While in custody he continued to act in a volatile and abusive manner and assaulted six Police Officers.

He was sentenced to 32 weeks in prison and ordered to pay compensation to his victims.

Detective Superintendent Graeme Wright, Commander for Scarborough and Ryedale said:

“This was a really upsetting and alarming incident for the staff and customers of the restaurant to witness on a Sunday afternoon in Whitby. I’d like to thank them for their swift action reporting it to police, which enabled officers to attend and quickly make the situation safe by arresting Brown.

Sadly when taken to the police station, Brown continued to act in a volatile and abusive manner and went on to assault a number of officers as they carried out their duties ensuring he was safe when in custody – spitting and urinating on them when they conducted safety checks.

I hope the speed with which Brown has been dealt with and put behind bars sends a clear message that we will not tolerate any threats or acts of violence against members of the public or the dedicated officers who work so hard to keep our community safe.”

Scarborough drug dealer jailed

Lee Colman (32) was sentenced to three years and nine months at York Crown Court after pleading guilty to possession with intent to supply heroin and crack cocaine.

On Saturday the 6^th of August 2022, plain clothes officers from Operation Expedite were on patrol on Johno’s Field, Scarborough when Coleman was seen on a small girl’s bike. He was meeting a known drug user and then headed off the field to the user’s address.

Coleman left the address shortly afterwards and when Officers attempted to stop him on his bike, he tried to evade them in a narrow alleyway. However, the detectives were able to grab him off the bike and arrest him.

Coleman was searched and was found with 104 wraps of crack cocaine and 31 wraps of heroin hidden in his underwear.

Cross-border police operation underway tackling quadbike and farm machinery thefts in the Whitby and Ryedale areas

A cross-border Police operation is underway in the Whitby and Ryedale areas following a spate of quadbike and farm machinery thefts.

It is believed criminals from over the Cleveland Police border have targeted more than 30 farms in North Yorkshire since November last year.

Following the development of intelligence and working closely with Cleveland Police, specialist resources have been deployed to the area in the effort to detect and deter the travelling thieves.

They are working with the local Neighbourhood Policing Teams to help reassure the concerned and worried members of the farming community, providing crime prevention support, and advice on how best to report such incidents to the police.

Detective Inspector Phil Giblin, from the Scarborough Investigation Hub, said:

“The cross-border criminals are causing misery and fear among the farming community in the Whitby and Ryedale areas. This is abhorrent and simply cannot be tolerated. Together with our colleagues at Cleveland Police, we are continuing to deploy extensive resources in our collective effort to arrest and bring the suspects to justice.

Our approach is relentless and any criminals heading our way can expect to be locked up by North Yorkshire or Cleveland Police when they are pursued over the border.”
