I have recently found myself browsing through old files, for no better purpose than to see what might chance to catch the eye.

Wind back just over five-and-a-half years to April 2015 – just before the last-but-one local election for seats on Scarborough Borough Council – and look what dropped onto my doormat, bearing an out-of-area postmark, tipping me off about the character of one of the candidates.

(I have, of course, fastidiously redacted any giveaway indications as to the identity of that candidate – who, at the time, seemed of no particular interest or special promise.)
